Aim of the course:
At the end of this course you will be able to:
• Know principles of regulator operation
You must know the basic principles of how a diving regulator  works in order to understand what each function is of the component parts. The course content will explain how the different types of regulator work and what part each component plays in its operation.

• Identify tools required
It is essential to have a good set of tools, in order to perform a breakdown of a regulator. Some tools are basic items, while others need to be specialist tools, bought from the manufacturers.

• Test a regulator prior to dismantling
Prior to dismantling a regulator it is good practice to get an idea of how it is currently performing. This is done by carrying out a performance check of both first and second stage responses.

• Dismantle a regulator competently
Dismantling a regulator into its component parts needs to be done in a logical and methodical manner. A procedure needs to be set up to ensure dismantling is methodical and nothing is left out.

• Clean and dry the component parts
Once a regulator has been dismantled its component parts must be thoroughly cleaned. Knowledge of how to clean parts safely, without damaging them, e.g. by using the wrong chemicals or temperature of cleaning fluid, is essential.

• Reassemble a regulator competently
Reassembly of the regulator is a staged procedure and should be followed carefully in order to ensure nothing is put in the wrong place, components are not left out and torque settings are correct.

• Test and adjust a regulator for optimum performance
Once assembled, the regulator needs to set up, including setting of adjustable first stages, and ensuring second stages do not free-flow too easily. Readings need to be taken of the performance and adjustments made to achieve optimum performance.

• Complete a report of actions
On completion of the work, the worksheet should be filled in with details of what has been found and done to the regulator. A record must be kept, by the centre, of all work performed on a customer’s equipment.
